After an aborted plan to kick off in 1974, the World Football League has come back, leaner, meaner, and with a few big-name stars who just could spell early success for this newest competitor to the NFL. While some of the questions that caused the league to call off their season last June still exist, there is more optimism, more stability, and more of a plan than we saw in the build up to their initially scheduled season.
In our preview of the WFL season ahead, we will look at the league on its second attempt to launch, breaking down the "Dixon-Hemmeter Plan" that seeks to both control the financial risks of the league and provide some star power, exploring the path forward for a league that advertises that it will be more fun, more fast-paced, and more fan-friendly than the NFL, including efforts to make players happier with more options to control their own destinies, and we will take a quick look at the 10 teams that are set to hit the field this upcoming holiday weekend.
MEET THE TEAMS OF THE WFL
The World Football League, after a one-year delay, are ready to kick off with 10 teams spanning the nation from the Atlantic coast to the Hawaiian islands in the Pacific. We introduce the teams, coaches, and players who will take the field in just 2 weeks. They include some names you will certainly recognize--names like Namath, Morton, Csonka, Greenwood, Hill, and Warfield--and some that we will all learn together as the on-field action plays out. But, our first task as football fans is to learn the teams themselves, so here they are, the 1975 World Football League teams.
