The Summer of 1974 was meant to be the start of something big, but something was wrong. With several ownership groups in disarray, teams struggling to build fanbases, sell tickets, and secure stadium leases, and the NFL posturing a lawsuit over the WFL's use of futures contracts, the league was off to a shaky start. Perhaps deferring their start by a year could give Gary Davidson and the stronger WFL owners time to put together a more viable product, a more stable league, and a more attractive product for fans. Only time would tell if the league was postponed only to come back stronger, or calling a premature death a delayed start.
